  2. England and Holland) and Prussia (supported
  3. by France and Spain) 1740 The Holy Roman 
  4. emperor Charles VI died and the succession
  5. of his daughter Maria Theresa was disputed by
  6. a number of European powers.  Frederick the
  7. Great of Prussia seized Silesia from Austria.
  8. 1743 At Dettingen an army of British,
  9. Austrians, and Hanoverians under the command
  10. of George II was victorious over the French.
  11. 1745 An Austro-English army was defeated at
  12. Fontenoy but British naval superiority was
  13. confirmed, and so there were gains in the
  14. Americas and India.  1748 The war was ended
  15. by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle.
